Birbeck College

About Birbeck College

Birkbeck College is affiliated to the University of London, and offers Undergraduate degrees especially for students who are working and would hence prefer to attend classes in the evening. It also provides postgraduate level Masters and phD programmes that can either be studied full-time or part-time. Other short courses are also available, various certificates and diploma's seek to continue educating the populace.

Previously the college was known as the Birbeck Literary and Scientific Institution, and is situated in London. The classes are however taught all over London in an attempt to make higher education more accessible to students. Due to this compartmentalized teaching nature, student life is not as intense as in other universities. There are no dormotories, and intercollegiate halls. Yet the Student Union is diverse and active. Activites range from football to magazine club, to drama and also supports the University of London student shop and bar.

The college has a unique coat of arms, represented by a lamp and an owl, with the crest carrying its motto, “In nocte Consilium”. It also has a mechanical literary review and a host of other achievements. It has entered teams to the University Challenge over the years and this has been met with varying degrees of success. It is a place for more mature students and for those who want to be part of the prestigious University of London, without having to be fully involved, and studying full-time.
